I suppose Hoskins is a thoroughly modern Milly: worship of sacred victims, mindless belief in equality (or a patronizing condescension – it's hard to tell – but always a cat-and-mouse game to play), sacrifice of his own children, lack of integrity, etc. He has no fixed points of reference but, like a character in Dante's inferno, he and a mob follow one flag after another, hither and fro, in a dark landscape from hell.
